THE RISE OF FUNCTIONAL & INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE: A GLOBAL TREND

By Lisa Durante, Wellness Evangelista & Holistic Retreats Curator

A LOOK BACK: ORIGINS OF A REVOLUTION

Since my days as editor of New You, the Middle East’s premier monthly BPA-audited magazine related to preventive health, aesthetic medicine, non-inflammatory cuisine and holistic healing experiences, I have seen how the popularity of Integrative and Functional Medicine has progressed, gaining in popularity and successful outcomes.

Expert Explains

“While both Integrative and Functional medicine have been on the periphery of mainstream medicine for some time, recent global health trends have propelled them into mainstream consciousness and patient uptake. This is evident from the growing numbers seen in my practice,” she says.

DEFINING THE TITANS: FUNCTIONAL VS INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE

Functional Medicine centres around a personalised approach. It delves deep into an individual's history, environment, and genetic factors to address the root causes of disease. The aim is not just symptom relief but whole-system healing.

Conversely, Integrative Medicine seeks to combine the best of conventional Western medicine with holistic and alternative treatments. It's a comprehensive approach, considering the patient's physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.

Dr Feruza clarifies, “Despite their nuanced differences, both branches prioritise the patient's whole journey rather than just a symptom or ailment. I see myself as a scientific ‘sleuth’, going beyond the trend of giving a ‘pill for every ill’, but rather never giving up on investigating the physical and psychosomatic causes of every condition or ailment.”

HOW DID SHE GET WHERE SHE IS?

Dr Feruza Gafarova boasts over a decade of expertise in general practice and endocrinology. Graduating with honours in 2006 from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, she furthered her studies with a master’s in Endocrinology in 2009. Further cementing her credentials in the UK, Dr Feruza acquired a postgraduate diploma in Diabetes from the University of Wales, Cardiff in 2015.

With a keen interest in anti-aging medicine, she's pursued training in BHRT at Dr Hertroghe Medical School and secured postgraduate degrees from both the American Academy of Anti-aging Medicine (A4M) and Russia's Preventage institute.

Practising in Dubai since 2015, Dr Feruza is renowned for her integrative approach and commitment to employing the latest medical innovations. She's an esteemed member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), A4M, and the Emirates Diabetes Society, among other professional affiliations.

GLOBAL STATS SPEAK VOLUMES

Recent data reveal that the global Functional and Integrative Medicine market is burgeoning. With a projected Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of nearly 18% from 2021 to 2030, it's evident that these branches are gaining worldwide recognition. The increasing numbers signify a global acknowledgement of their effectiveness and a move towards holistic health approaches.

LEADING LIGHTS: EXPERTS TO WATCH

Aside from having close associates in these fascinating areas that work with patients, I gain tremendous insight from experts who work in upskilling physicians and clinicians in the Integrative and Functional health space.

One of these is Servane Collette, founder and MD of Invicta Med, who brings over a decade of experience in curating medical training courses across Dubai and Europe. She highlights her mission.

“I recognised the hurdles doctors, medical professionals, and private practices often face and I pinpointed a gap that is now being systematically leveraged by myself and my team. While clinical training is robust, the holistic skills needed for success in today's competitive medical marketplace often lag behind. These competencies are vital, especially in the areas of Functional and Integrative healthcare where an even more curated and humane-centric approach is needed.”

Despite possessing vision, passion, and significant investment, many medical endeavours grapple with the heightened expectations of patients and management. Servane believes that it’s “pivotal for medical professionals to not just have knowledge but to seamlessly execute it. This encompasses mastering soft skills like communication, exuding confidence in services offered, and elevating overall professional prowess — essentials for every clinic staff member in the modern age.”

Uniting her fervour for education and business acumen, Servane has championed a fusion of innovative training and recruitment strategies. The mission? Optimising performance in medical practices, amplifying career trajectories, and championing the success of each individual within the medical realm.

It may seem unnecessary for me to consider this aspect. However, as a curator of wellness retreats, a key aspect of my work is to authentically advise where my Wellbeing Explorers (the name I give my getaway guests), can actually go to benefit from superior Integrative and Functional Medicine expertise. This is why Servane’s tireless B2B upskilling is as important as it is.

On a broader scale, several medical experts have pioneered and popularised these pioneering fields, becoming household names, revered by millions.

  • Dr Mark Hyman: Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine and author of several best-selling health books.

  • Dr Andrew Weil: Known for establishing the field of Integrative Medicine and author of "Spontaneous Healing".

  • Dr Deepak Chopra: A vocal advocate for holistic and alternative approaches to health, merging Western medicine principles with ancient wisdom.

WOMEN WHO SHINE: FEMALE MEDICAL LUMINARIES

  • Dr Sara Gottfried: An expert in hormonal balance, author of "The Hormone Cure" and "Younger," she bridges the gap between traditional and holistic approaches to women’s health.

  • Dr Christiane Northrup: Renowned for her work in women's health and wellness, she penned the influential "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom".

  • Dr Aviva Romm: Integrating traditional medicine with herbal wisdom, her work focuses on women's health, pediatrics, and thyroid conditions.

MUST-READS IN THE SPHERE

Whilst the lure of Dr Google is tempting for many, my years of interviewing experts, cross-checking facts and educating myself so that I could be adept at asking the most intelligent questions implied that I too partake in earnest self-study to stay abreast of innovations in this constantly evolving sphere.

These are my go-to books that I either have read, or listened to as an audiobook.

  • "The UltraMind Solution" by Dr Mark Hyman.

  • "Integrative Medicine" by Dr Andrew Weil.

  • "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" by Dr Deepak Chopra.

  • "The Hormone Cure" by Dr Sara Gottfried.

  • "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" by Dr Christiane Northrup.

APPROPRIATE APPLICATIONS & LIMITATIONS

Researchers list the areas where Functional and Integrative Medicine excel:

Chronic Disease Management: Especially conditions like diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and gut health issues.

Preventive Health: Regular checks and lifestyle changes to prevent the onset of diseases.

Mental and Emotional Wellbeing: Stress management, depression, and anxiety.

LIFESTYLE DISEASES: THE SILENT EPIDEMIC

The world today is witnessing an alarming rise in lifestyle diseases. A 2019 WHO report highlighted the following staggering statistics:

  • Cardiovascular Diseases: Account for 17.9 million deaths annually, representing 31% of global deaths.

  • Type 2 Diabetes: Over 422 million people affected globally, with numbers predicted to double by 2030.

  • Obesity: Tripled since 1975; over 1.9 billion adults were overweight in 2019, with 650 million being obese.

  • Chronic Respiratory Diseases: More than 3 million deaths annually.

  • Cancer: 9.6 million deaths in 2018 alone.

Lifestyle medicine that embraces Functional and Integrative Health approaches are excellent in addressing these modern day epidemics.

However, for acute emergency situations, like heart attacks or severe infections, traditional medicine’s immediate interventions remain crucial. While Functional and Integrative Medicine bring a lot to the table, they're not replacements for urgent, intensive care. After all, if you are hit by a bus on a road, the emergency room is the place to go, isn’t it?

REVAMPING HEALTH FOR THE AGING: INTEGRATIVE & FUNCTIONAL APPROACHES

As the global population ages, there's an increasing emphasis on not just living longer but living healthier. It's here also that Functional and Integrative Medicine present tremendous opportunities:

  • Personalised Health Plans: As each individual ages differently, a tailored approach ensures optimal wellbeing.

  • Focus on Prevention: Addressing root causes early on prevents disease manifestation in the first place, paving the way for a healthier ageing process.

  • Holistic Healing: Embracing emotional and mental health alongside physical wellbeing fosters a comprehensive approach to ageing.

  • Increased Health-Span: More than increasing lifespan, these methods aim at prolonging the period one remains healthy, active, and free from debilitating chronic diseases.

ONLINE HEALTH EVOLUTION: THE POWER OF DIGITAL CARE

As technology advances, so does the potential for Integrative and Functional Medicine. The emergence of physician-driven online advice, DNA testing, and functional blood tests is a testament to the digital revolution in healthcare.

Benefits of Digital Care

  • Accessibility: Reach out to experts from any part of the globe, breaking down geographical constraints.

  • Precision: DNA and blood tests offer tailored insights, allowing personalised treatment plans.

  • Compliance Coaching: Regular online sessions help maintain patient commitment, ensuring better adherence to treatment regimens.

  • Continuous Monitoring: Real-time data tracking allows for the timely adaptation of treatments, leading to optimal outcomes.

  • Privacy: For those who value discretion, online consultations can offer an added layer of privacy.

Accurate Measurement, Monitoring, and Mentoring

Dr Massimo Ulderico De Martino, Endocrinologist and Accredited Breathwork Master explains that “Harnessing the trifecta of measurement, monitoring, and mentoring ensures that patients are not just receiving care but are actively engaged in their wellness journey.”

He lists the result:

“Improved Health Outcomes: Continuous tracking and adjustments lead to better results.

Achieving Wellness Goals: With mentors guiding the way, patients are better equipped to meet and even surpass their health aspirations.

Empowered Patients: Knowledge is power. By understanding their health metrics, patients can take proactive steps towards their wellbeing.”

“As a Functional Medicine specialist I look at a basics-first approach to your wellbeing. The basics are your food, gut health, sleep, stress management and targeted supplementation. However, my approach is to use a combination of the best in Western Medicine along with Functional Medicine, not one in exclusion of the other. I am a great believer in the power of making small incremental changes over time.”
